Is Shawarma Halal?

What does “halal” mean?

Halal is an Arabic word that means “permissible.” When it comes to food, it describes anything allowed under Islamic dietary law.

For meat, halal covers how the animal is raised and slaughtered. The animal must be healthy at the time, slaughtered by hand with a clean cut, and its blood fully drained. Pork and its by-products are never halal, and neither is alcohol.

In short, halal is less about the recipe and more about the sourcing and handling of the ingredients — especially the meat. That’s why two plates of shawarma can look identical and only one of them be halal.

How to know a restaurant is halal

The most reliable way is to ask directly. A restaurant that sources halal meat will tell you plainly, and many will note it on the menu, a window sign, or their website.

Here are a few things worth checking:

• Ask where the meat comes from. A halal kitchen will know its suppliers and be happy to say so.
• Look for a stated claim. Wording like “halal” or “halal-sourced” on the menu or site is a good sign.
• Notice the whole menu. Halal restaurants don’t serve pork, and many keep the kitchen alcohol-free.

If you ever can’t get a clear answer, that itself tells you something. A restaurant that takes halal seriously won’t leave you guessing.
