Mediterranean Catering in San Diego: A Planning Guide
Mediterranean Catering in San Diego: A Planning Guide
When people start planning Mediterranean catering in San Diego, they often picture one foil tray of dry rice and a tub of hummus from the back of a grocery store. That is not what we do. We are a family-run Iraqi-Mediterranean kitchen in Ocean Beach, and when we cater, the same halal-sourced shawarma and char-grilled kebab we make to order in the shop is what shows up at your event — just scaled up for a room full of people.
Here is how we think about catering, what feeds a crowd well, and how far ahead you need to call us.
Trays vs. family-style: pick the format first
Most catering decisions come down to how the food gets served, not just what is on it. We build two ways.
- Catering trays — half and full pans of shawarma, kebab, rice, salads, and sides. Easy to set on a counter, label, and let people serve themselves. This is the workhorse for office lunches and anything where folks drift in and out.
- Family-style spreads — the same food laid out as a shared table, the way it is eaten at home. Better for parties, rehearsal dinners, and weddings where the meal is part of the gathering, not a quick refuel.
Done right, either format gives everyone protein, rice, fresh salad, warm pita, and sauces in one pass. Done the cheap way, you get one protein and a mountain of filler rice. We do not pad the trays.
What people usually order for catering
The dishes that travel best are the ones that hold up well in a pan and feed a mix of eaters. Chicken and beef shawarma are the anchors, served over basmati rice. Beef kebab brings the char-grilled flavor for the people who want something off the grill. Falafel, hummus, fattoush, and tabouli cover vegetarian and vegan guests without a separate special order, because much of this food is grain- and vegetable-forward by default. Please note that we cook in a shared kitchen, so we cannot guarantee against cross-contact between ingredients — tell us about any allergies and we will do our best to help.
If you want a dish that gets people talking, add a tray of our Cream Chop — it is one of our catering favorites. You can build the whole order off our full menu; the catering picks are just the items that scale cleanly.
Ordering and lead time
The honest answer on timing: the more notice, the better the spread. For office lunches and standard trays, give us a couple of days so we can prep proteins properly and shop for what we need. For larger parties, weddings, and full corporate catering events, reach out a week or more ahead so we can lock in headcount, portions, and a pickup or drop-off window.
We will help you size it. Tell us your headcount and whether it is a grazing crowd or a sit-down meal, and we will tell you how many trays of what. No guessing, no over-ordering to be safe.
Areas we serve
We cater out of our Ocean Beach kitchen at 4884 Newport Ave, so the closest and easiest events are right here in Ocean Beach catering territory. From there we handle Mediterranean catering across San Diego — La Jolla offices, Mission Bay gatherings, Point Loma, and downtown. If you are close, pickup is simple; for larger orders farther out, ask us about drop-off when you call.
Why operators and planners come back
It comes down to a few things we do not cut corners on: halal sourcing, a family Iraqi-Mediterranean recipe, and proteins made to order rather than reheated from a bag. We cook the catering the same way we cook the line. That is the whole difference.
