Pacific Beach locals — we’re 10 minutes south on Newport Ave.
Real Mediterranean shawarma, 10 minutes from Pacific Beach.
Pacific Beach has good food — taco shops, surf-bar burgers, plenty of pizza, a few decent sushi spots. What it doesn’t have is a strong Middle Eastern presence. If you live in PB and you’ve been craving traditional shawarma, you’ve probably already learned that the closest serious place is south, in Ocean Beach.
That’s us — Shawarma House SD, family-run Mediterranean kitchen on Newport Avenue in OB, 10 minutes south of Pacific Beach via Mission Boulevard. Worth the drive, and here’s why.
How we cook
Shawarma is supposed to be slow. Beef and chicken get marinated overnight in our family Iraqi spice blend (garlic, lemon, cumin, paprika, sumac, and a few things we don’t write down), stacked on a vertical spit, and slow-roasted for hours. The cook hand-shaves the cone as it finishes cooking. That’s the only way shawarma actually develops the texture and depth of flavor it’s supposed to have. If a place isn’t doing this, they’re selling you flavored meat in a wrap.
The non-negotiables:
- Halal-sourced beef and chicken.
- House-made sauces — garlic toum, tahini, hot sauce, all made fresh in the kitchen every morning.
- Family recipe rooted in Iraq, two generations.
- Short, focused menu — we’d rather do six things well than thirty things mediocre.
What PB regulars actually order
Pacific Beach customers tend to lean toward two things: the chicken shawarma plate (light enough for a beach lunch) and the beef shawarma fries (loaded fries with shawarma and garlic sauce — it’s the late-night PB order). The family combo is also popular for groups coming back from the beach who want one big shared meal.
Logistics for PB customers
Newport Avenue has free 2-hour street parking. There’s a public lot a block off the avenue. Pickup orders are typically ready 10—15 minutes after you place them through the ORDER DIRECT button at the top of this page. Most PB customers order from home, drive south on Mission Boulevard, and grab their plate without parking stress.
If you’re making a day of it, OB Pier is two blocks west — locals walk their plate down to the pier and eat there.

Frequently asked
Q: Is it really worth the drive from PB?
A: Honest answer — depends on what you’re after. If you want a quick wrap and you don’t care how the meat is cooked, there are options closer in PB. If you want shawarma the way it’s actually supposed to taste — overnight marinade, vertical spit, hand-shaved, halal, real toum — yes, the 10-minute drive is worth it. Most of our PB customers say the same thing on their second or third visit: they wish they’d known about us sooner.
