Mission Beach has a great food scene — but if you’re looking for traditional Middle Eastern shawarma, the options thin out fast. Most of what’s nearby is either a wrap counter inside a larger restaurant or pre-cooked meat warmed back up. That’s not what we do.
We’re Shawarma House SD, a family-run Mediterranean kitchen on Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach — about 5 minutes south of Mission Beach by car. If you live in MB or you’re staying there for the weekend, here’s why we’re worth knowing about.
How we make shawarma
Beef and chicken are marinated overnight in our family Iraqi-Mediterranean spice blend, stacked on a vertical spit, and slow-roasted for hours. The cook hand-shaves the meat off the cone as it finishes cooking, so what hits your plate just came off the spit. Slow-roasting is what creates the flavor and texture you remember from the Middle East — it’s the difference between shawarma and “meat in a wrap.”
The things that matter:
- Halal-sourced beef and chicken.
- House-made sauces — garlic toum, tahini, hot sauce, made fresh every morning. Real fluffy toum, not bottled.
- Family recipe out of Iraq, two generations old.
- Short, focused menu — plates, pita wraps, kebabs, salads, sides, and a few signature loaded options like beef shawarma fries.
What MB locals order
Most Mission Beach customers go for the chicken shawarma plate at lunch (light, fast, doesn’t slow you down for the rest of the day) and the beef shawarma plate for dinner (slower, richer, better for after a beach day). The beef shawarma fries is the late-night order — loaded shawarma over fries with garlic sauce. It travels well in the car ride back to Mission Boulevard.
Pickup, delivery, and parking
Newport Avenue has free 2-hour street parking on both sides. There’s also a public lot a block off Newport, and the OB Pier is two blocks west if you want to walk down with your plate. Pickup orders are usually ready 10–15 minutes after you order through the ORDER DIRECT button on this page. Delivery to Mission Beach is also available through the Toast platform.

We cater across San Diego, including Mission Beach — corporate lunches, beach houses, weddings, birthdays. We deliver. Catering is ordered through ezCater, and the catering menu is built around the same proteins and sauces but scaled to feed groups.
